How to Make Money on eBay the Simple Way (9 Steps)

Sign up for an eBay account by going to the main eBay site and clicking the 'Register' link. Provide the requested information to establish the account, and create a username and a secure password. Guard your password carefully, since an individual who guesses your password could host auctions on your behalf, or even accept payment for fraudulent items. Your eBay reputation is critical to your success, so take steps to protect your online identity by choosing a password that is hard to guess, and by changing your password often.
Establish a Paypal account as well. You need to have a Paypal account in place so you can accept payments from online buyers. Just go to the Paypal website and enter the required information to sign up for an account.
Search your home for unwanted and unneeded items. Clean out the utility room, the basement, the attic, the garage and any other storage spaces. Bring all of your items into one area of your home and pick out the ones that are still usable. Throw the rest of the items away.
Create a list of all the items you have to sell, then check the final selling price of similar items on eBay. EBay has a 'Completed Listings' feature members can use to check the prices of similar items. Make sure you enter a complete description, including the model number if you have it. This will give you a more accurate list of sold items and their prices. Although you are not guaranteed to get similar prices, checking the completed listings can give you an idea of what to expect.
Set up an area to take photographs of your items. Good photos are a must on eBay, since your buyers will want to see what they are bidding on. Use an attractive cloth in a color that will complement and contrast with the item well. Don't use a yellow cloth as the background for a gold ring, for instance. It is important that the item you are selling stand out in each photo. Take high-quality pictures of each item, then bring your list of items with you to the computer.
Log on to your eBay account and go to the selling section. Choose an appropriate category for each item, then type a thorough description of the item and upload your photographs. Provide as much information as you can about each item, since buyers will rely on that information to determine whether they want to bid on your product.
Check your auctions frequently and respond to any buyer questions promptly. EBay has a feature that allows buyers and sellers to ask each other questions about the items up for bid. Check your auctions for questions at least one or two times a day, and always respond to questions right away.
Send an email to each winning bidder after the auction has ended to let them know they have won the item. EBay sends an email to the buyer as well, along with payment instructions. Always ship your items promptly, as soon as payment is received, and send a personal email to the buyers to let them know their items are on the way.
Continue to use eBay to clean out your home and closet. As you get a feel for which items sell well on eBay, you can begin to purchase items for resale at yard sales, thrift stores and local auctions. You can also ask friends and neighbors if they have items they would like to sell on eBay.
