How to Assemble Bookmarks at Home to Make Money

Find stock images for your bookmarks whose rights that allow you to use them commercially, and save them to your computer. Since women and elderly people are the most avid book readers, according to a 2007 Associated Press-Ipsos survey, consider catering your bookmark designs to them. For example, you might save a black and white image of a record player for one bookmark and an image of a pink high heel for another.
Use image editing software to resize the image to 1-by-6 inches so that it's the size of a bookmark. Print two copies of the image on stock card. You may have to adjust the paper weight settings on your computer's printer settings for the paper to feed into the printer correctly.
Cut out the images. Glue the blank sides together so that the image shows right side up on both sides of the bookmark.
Lay a layer of laminate carefully on top of the bookmark, lining it up with one edge of the bookmark before smoothing it down. Flip the bookmark over and repeat this process on the other side to wrap the bookmark in a protective layer.
Punch a hole through the bookmark, about 1 cm below the center of the top edge. Thread a ribbon, or a bundle of three pieces of yarn, through the hole and tie a knot gently securing it to the bookmark.
Repeat steps 1 through 5 to make a collection of various bookmarks. Make several copies of each design.
Calculate the cost of your materials to make the bookmarks. Divide this total by the number of bookmarks you have made to determine the price you must sell each for to break even. Add to this amount to make a profit. For example, if each bookmark cost you 5 cents to make, you can charge $1 per bookmark and make a profit of 95 cents on each one.
Give your bookmark business a name. People will need a name when referring others to your business.
Take pictures of your bookmarks. You will need them as samples of your products.
Make posters advertising your bookmarks. Include your business name, prices, contact information and photos of your bookmarks. Ask a manager for permission to post them in places where your target market is likely to gather, such as bookstores, coffee shops, retirement homes and salons.
